Escalator and Travellator Maintenance

Planned maintenance helps identify wear, adjustment requirements and developing faults before they cause avoidable disruption.

The maintenance requirements of each unit should reflect its age, condition, usage, operating environment and manufacturer’s recommendations. High-traffic equipment may require a different maintenance approach from equipment with lighter or less frequent use.

Maintenance attention may include:

  • Steps, pallets and associated running equipment

  • Step and pallet chains

  • Handrails and handrail-drive systems

  • Comb plates and entrance areas

  • Skirting and balustrade components

  • Drive equipment and braking systems

  • Safety switches and monitoring devices

  • Lubrication points

  • Controls and fault history

  • Lighting and visual indicators

  • General operation and condition reporting

Fault Diagnosis and Repairs

Escalator and travellator faults can result from mechanical wear, electrical problems, safety-device activation, handrail issues or damage to entrance and running components.

HEC provides multi-brand fault diagnosis and corrective work. Repair recommendations are based on the cause of the fault, the condition of associated equipment and the availability of suitable replacement components.

Repair work may include:

  • Handrail-drive faults

  • Comb-plate and entrance repairs

  • Step, pallet and chain-related repairs

  • Skirt-panel and balustrade components

  • Drive and brake faults

  • Control-system faults

  • Safety-switch replacement or adjustment

  • Lighting and indicator repairs

  • Lubrication-system faults

  • Testing and recommissioning following repair

Escalator and Travellator Handrail Replacement

Worn, damaged, cracked or poorly tracking handrails can affect equipment reliability and the passenger experience. HEC undertakes escalator and travellator handrail replacement using dedicated in-house handrail preparation equipment.

The work may include:

  1. Assessment of the existing handrail and associated drive system.

  2. Confirmation of dimensions and equipment requirements.

  3. Preparation of the replacement handrail.

  4. Removal of the existing handrail.

  5. Installation, tensioning and tracking adjustments.

  6. Inspection of related guides and drive components.

  7. Testing before the unit is returned to service.

The condition of the handrail-drive system, guides, rollers and associated equipment should be considered alongside the handrail itself.

Planned Handrail Works

Where possible, handrail replacement should be planned before deterioration results in an unplanned shutdown. Advance planning allows the correct handrail, access arrangements, work area and programme to be coordinated with the customer.

For sites with multiple units, work can be assessed and prioritised according to condition and operational requirements.

Escalator and Travellator Modernisation

Modernisation may be appropriate where equipment remains fundamentally serviceable but individual systems have become obsolete, unreliable or difficult to support.

Depending on the assessment, modernisation may include:

  • Control-system upgrades

  • Drive and brake components

  • Safety devices and monitoring

  • Handrail-drive equipment

  • Entrance and comb-plate components

  • Lighting and visual indicators

  • Selected mechanical components

  • Electrical equipment and wiring

  • Refurbishment of visible finishes

The scope should be based on the condition of the individual unit rather than applying the same package to every installation.

A Condition-Based Multi-Brand Approach

HEC works with equipment from a range of escalator and travellator manufacturers. We assess each installation according to its condition, service history, usage and supportability.

Where existing components remain suitable, they may be retained. Where equipment is worn, obsolete or contributing to repeated faults, we explain the available repair or upgrade options.

Supporting High-Traffic Buildings

Escalators and travellators are often installed in locations where downtime has an immediate operational impact. These may include:

  • Shopping centres and retail premises

  • Transport and passenger facilities

  • Commercial buildings

  • Public-access buildings

  • Hotels and leisure facilities

  • Mixed-use developments

Maintenance and repair planning should take account of passenger flow, public access, safe work areas and the operational requirements of the site.

Clear Technical Reporting

Following an assessment, maintenance visit or repair attendance, HEC records the relevant findings and identifies any recommended corrective work.

Where further work is required, the recommendation should explain the observed condition, the proposed action and whether the issue requires immediate attention or planned intervention.

Repair, Modernise or Replace?

The appropriate option depends on the condition and supportability of the equipment.

We consider:

  • Breakdown and fault history

  • Overall mechanical and electrical condition

  • Availability of replacement components

  • Handrail and handrail-drive condition

  • Safety-device reliability

  • Equipment age and usage

  • Operational impact of downtime

  • The expected benefit of repair or modernisation

  • The practical life of retained equipment

Where replacement is more appropriate than continued repair, we explain the reasons and the available options.
